Two strong platforms, compared vendor-neutrally
We advise you independently between Microsoft Hyper-V and Proxmox VE. Hyper-V makes sense if you're already deeply invested in the Microsoft ecosystem (Microsoft 365, Azure, Entra ID) and need Windows Server licenses anyway – Hyper-V itself is now only available as a role within a licensed Windows Server, no longer as a standalone free product. Proxmox VE's core is open-source and requires no core-based licensing cost for the hypervisor itself; optional support subscriptions are tiered by response time. Especially since VMware's licensing changes following Broadcom's acquisition, many companies are re-evaluating their virtualization platform – Proxmox has established itself as one of the most sought-after alternatives.
